May 16th, 20102010
April 27th, 2010So… it’s 2010. It’s been 2010. I’m late with this update.
This year we have Slayer and Megadeth touring with Testament supporting their “American Carnage” tour, Morbid Angel recording their first album without Pete Sandoval… and Spawn of Possession, Decrepit Birth, Gorguts, Gorod and a few others recording and hopefully releasing new material.
All in all, plenty [...]
Those Whom the Gods Detest
November 16th, 2009
November brings us none other than Nile’s sixth release, entitled “Those Whom the Gods Detest”. If you aren’t already familiar with Nile, you’ve been missing out.
World Painted Blood
November 14th, 2009
The almighty Slayer released their eleventh (and possibly their last) studio album, World Painted Blood this month. It’s one of the better Metal releases this year.
Here and Beyond
October 22nd, 2009It’s 2009. Nearly 2010. Arguably, that’s 30 years since heavy metal musicians began down the path towards extremity.
The beginning of the 80’s marked the melding of the newly formed hardcore punk music, which was gaining popularity on both sides of the Atlantic, and the speed metal sound with which many heavy metal bands had [...]
Death Monsters
September 14th, 2009One of the gnarliest tours coming up is Nuclear Blast Record’s “Monsters of Death” tour, presented by Decibel Magazine.
Behemoth's Perfected Vision Ov Blasphemy
August 22nd, 2009Behemoth has long been one of the most extreme Death Metal bands in the world… and it’s clear that they intend to stay the course. While the band has never wanted to confine themselves to one specific branch of extreme metal, the formula has almost always been a cross between the brutal side of Death Metal and the blurry, menacing atmosphere of the finest Northern European Black Metal. Evangelion does not deviate from that legacy.
A Report From The Tech Death Frontline
June 21st, 2009Gorod is a Technical Death Metal band hailing from France. France has been putting out great Death Metal for some time. Disavowed has risen far past my expectations, but upon discovering Bordeaux’s Gorod, my outlook on Europe’s impact on Tech Death changed immediately.
A More Natural Chaos Kreated
January 30th, 2009The European Extreme Metal scene developed much like ours; In America we had our ‘big four’ thrash bands, and at the same time in Germany there were three more: Sodom, Destruction, and the subject of this review, Kreator.
Since their debut album Endless Pain in 1985, Kreator have been at the forefront of extreme metal. This year brings us Hordes Of Chaos, their follow-up to 2005’s Enemy Of God. Kreator’s 12th studio album, these 9 songs are some of the best Thrash Metal I have ever heard. Period.
As Eden Burns Challenges The Celestial Bodies Of Thrash
November 18th, 2008One of my favorite albums is Sepultura’s revered 1991 opus, Arise. At the time of its release, it was the perfect blend of the thrash metal sound that had pushed heavy metal music into the extreme, and the newly emerging death metal sound that bands like Possessed and Death had worked so hard to champion… a perfect middle-ground. Today, it is a metalhead’s classic and is still considered one of the greatest death / thrash records of all time.
My first encounter with the texan metal outfit As Eden Burns was met with both hope and skepticism. Far too many bands have set out to achieve this coveted middle-ground but never managed to sound natural (at least to these ears) in their musical endeavors.
